Working with codecs

Using AVI-files and codecs may lead to problems and obscurity. To get in the way of  problems we listed some hints concerning this issue.

A Codec is an application that compress and decompress multimedia datas.

Basically you can assume that theses codecs are installed on a Windows-PC (from Windows 95):

  • RLE: Microsoft RLE Codec
  • IV32: Indeo Codec R3.2 by Intel
  • CVID: Cinepak Codec Radius Inc.
  • CRAM: Microsoft Video 1

Further codecs automatically are installed with the installation of Windows-Media-Player. For example the Indeo® video 5.10 is a popular codec.

Within our models we use to work with the Codec Indeo® video 5.10.
Textures used as AVI-files are generated with this codec and only can be played on systems having this codec installed. In case of a missing codec, please use this download to install Indeo® video 5.10:

On our web sites you also find AVI-files generated with the XviD MPEG4 Codec.  In case of a missing codec, please use this download to install XviD MPEG4:

(Download ca. 0,3 MB)
